Lake Tahoe when you first hear that you think about a big giant lake stuck right in between California and Nevada. The lake was formed over 2 million years ago and is part of the Lake Tahoe Basin let's not focus on the boring stuff. Let's look at something that is Lake Tahoe is also well known for.

Lake Tahoe has seven main ski resorts in total each with their own history and some even going as far as the middle of the last century. These are resorts that see visitors, so it may be handy to stay at one of the various Lake Tahoe vacation rentals.

The Heavenly Mountain resort has the largest ski area in both California and Nevada. It is located on the state line and has 97 runs and 30 lifts that are spread all over the two states. The resort spans 4,800 acres with 33% developed for skiing. It is also Tahoe's highest ski resort with its highest peak and lift service over 10,000 feet and a vertical rise of 3,500 feet. The resort gets an average of 360 inches of snow annually and also boasts one of the country's largest snow making machines. The resort was first opened under the name Bijou Skyway Park in 1947 but was purchased and renamed to Heavenly in 1955

Squaw Valley Ski Resort is the second largest in Lake Tahoe but is still one of the largest in America; it was opened in 1949 and is located near Tahoe City in the Olympic Valley. It was a site used in the 1960 Winter Olympics and is special because of the advanced ski lifts it has and has the only funitel in the US. It attracts approximately 600,000 visitors a year.

Located near Squaw Valley is Alpine Meadows this is a ski resort that is located in the northern region of Lake Tahoe. The resort isn't as big as the previous two as it has 11 chairlifts and 2 surface lifts that covers over 2,000 acres of terrain. It was built as an alternative to the fasted paced neighbour (Squaw Valley) and is one that is very popular with families. It is also home of the Jamaican Ski Team; the resort was opened in 1961.

Also located to the north of Lake Tahoe is the Northstar at Tahoe Resort, this is probably the most modern out of all resorts as it was built in 1972. You can tell though as it is one of the few resorts that is open all year round. It has numerous summer activities that you wouldn't normally associate with ski resorts such as an 18 hole golf course and a lift served mountain bike park. It also includes a newly built village that includes shops, restaurants, a skating rink and many more. There are plans for mountain expansion with new slopes and lifts being developed. Northstar is also known for its tree skiing. Although the slopes aren't as steep as Squaw Valley Ski Resort and Alpine Meadows.

The other resorts are have their own quirks about them such as the Kirkwood Mountain Resort is open all year round and focuses on skiing and snowboarding in the winter and hiking and mountain biking in the summer. The Sierra at Tahoe resort is mainly a family resort and the Mt. Rose (also known as Ski Tahoe) is located in the Toiyabe National Forest which is the largest national forest in America outside of America.

Lake Tahoe has often been described as the ultimate ski destination and it's not hard to see why, I mean when you have various ski resorts that pre-date 50 years it's not easy to justify that claim.
